A team of scientists, field guides and a descendant of U.S. polar explorer Adolphus Greely set out to retrace the 1881 Lady Franklin Bay Expedition’s perilous attempt to build a scientific research station on Ellesmere Island near the North Pole. Chronicle their modern-day journey by kayak with a historical retelling of the Greely expedition through diary entries, letters and archival photographs.

Everybody expected military flight Boxtop 22 from Thule into the vast frozen wilderness of Canada's North Western territories to be boring routine, but in a matter of minutes a crash reduces Gulf War veteran pilot Captain John Couch's crew and passengers to ever-growing despair. First they consider themselves relatively lucky as 14 out of 18 aboard are alive, including Captain Wilma De Groot, a medical doctor, but as time progresses the merciless cold makes it seem hopeless to check on Bob and Sue, who cannot be moved near the only campfire, while rescue attempts on land from Alert ('only' about 10 miles) and by air from Edmonton (8 hours flying) take no less then 32 hours to reach the plane wreck...

Montana cattle rancher John Alexander is a strong-minded individual and a man of few words. Because he’s land-rich but cash-poor, he grudgingly accepts an offer from a production company to use his land as a film location. Though it’s good money, the tough rancher doesn’t trust that the Hollywood film crew will treat his land with the respect it deserves. Alexander holds onto a deeply traditional vision of his world just as the film’s director, a creative urbanite named Fabian, maintains his own vision for his film. Both men are hoping for the best: Alexander wants to save his ranch, and Fabian wants to be catapulted to the next 'it' filmmaker.
